State of the Tank: (cont.) |

been doing too well of late and I attribute this also to poor placement on my part, in this case, an area where it it’s subjected to a lack of good water flow and not enough light. So you’d think the solution would seem rather simple for a change, right? Well, not really. If you recall, the reason it was moved down to its present location in the first place was Majanos. And it’s since it’s quite obvious that they’re still around, putting it back would be just trading a new problem for an old familiar one. Somewhere in here, I’m sure there’s a great metaphor for life, but now that I’m at an age where I understand neither, I’ll just leave finding it to you guys while I move on with the tank.
The GOOD news is that everything else (‘SPS’, ‘LPS’, Fish, and Inverts) is doing wonderfully. Oh, I’m still fighting my constant battle with mushrooms, which continue to amaze me with not only their resiliency, but also their uncanny ability to ‘know’ just where that expensive or sentimental favorite piece of coral is placed so they can appear out of nowhere and smother it. By the way, I’ve found that while Joe’s Juice does work on them, it is imperative to keep watching for their inevitable return. Then juice the ‘offspring’ and the ‘offspring’ after that. After three or four applications, it seems they finally get the message. Scissors work too but the reincarnation period is much shorter. And grinding them just makes more. |

Another hardware purchase this month was an Aqualight Advanced Series Halide Fixture from Coralife (Link). The plan is to use this light on what is now my little 29g refugium once the new sump goes in. I had Barr Aquatics build a refugium area into the new sump where I will use my current 96W fluorescents to light the Cheatomorphia and live rock I will place on the bare bottom. My current fuge will then be a remote tank (still connected to the main) and used perhaps a species tank for either a pair of clowns or as refuge for some zoos, Acanthastrea, and a Mystery Wrasse (one of my favorites). It too will be barebottomed, by the way.
Now, before I get into the ‘wonderfulness’ that transpired with my final purchase of the month, let us begin with a little backstory:
Some of you may recall a few months ago, I was musing about temperature alarms. This was because although the tank and sump are covered for leaks due to a few ‘waterbug’ devices on the floor that are connected to my home alarm system, all I really have to alert me to a rise in temperature is the alarm built into my ‘Big Temp’ digital thermometer. I have tested this alarm and it works pretty well…IF you’re somewhat nearby when it sounds. But I live in a pretty large house and the tank is technically in the basement. So if I’m in a second floor bedroom, no way am I gonna hear it. Not even at night, which, if I |
