State of the Tank: (cont.) |

anemone while also serving double duty as a frag holding tank...which makes the anemone thing fairly stupid, doesn't it? Anyway, I got rid of the sandbed and stepped up the current a bit via powerheads along with the tank's own returns. Also, this tank is actually plumbed into my system thus eliminating the old J-tube filter box set up I had before as well as my worries that someday it would break siphon and cause a disaster.
The tank is lit by a Coralife Aqualight-Advanced Series HQI Hang On Tank Mount. It provides 150W of 20K illumination, has a built in cooling fan, and can swivel at three different points. Quite a cool little light. The reason we have it mounted at the end like this is to provide less light for the lower light loving corals at the tank's opposite end. I'm sure you recognize a few of the specimens that have now been moved here. Of course it seems like NOTHING can happen without some sort of silly mishap these days, at least not in my little sphere of existence and THIS silly mishap was this: . Can you see the installation mistake? Look down. Both the tank's intake and return pipes are mounted under one of the UV's bulb cleaner plungers thereby rendering it useless. This of course, will be fixed.
Most of the other good news came from Southern California this month, which I find particularly odd |

since I received so little of it when I was living there. First, I got to take my second 'cherry picking' tour with Ali (Project Reef on RC). As I might have stated previously, hitting all the local reefers spots with Ali is like having an all-access pass at a rock concert. Everybody knows him, everybody likes him, and virtually nothing is off limits to him. In addition to many of the usual great haunts (Walt Smith's, Tongs, Jeff's Exotics, Tyree's, etc.), this time we visited Eric Caamano, the owner/operator of Frag Farmer.com and went to visit his new store, Central Aquarium and Reefs. God, you SoCal guys are lucky! All I ask is that just ONE of those guys open an East Coast branch someday. Not only was Eric's inventory just amazing but also he is a truly nice guy and clearly someone who has a passion for the hobby. It's that passion that seems to be missing in many of the LFS's back here. Not sure why. Anyway, if you're looking for something a little different, I suggest you peruse Eric's website. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
So what did I get there? Well...
[NOTE: To everyone who's going to email me reminding me of my promise NOT to add anything new to the tank for awhile, I officially designate the time between now and when I made that statement as being 'awhile'. So there.] |
