Sinularia Archives

"This was the first "coral" in the tank, period. It's even older than most of the LR and as such, probably one of the last pieces I'd want to give up. Amazingly, for the first two years, it didn't grow an inch or even attach itself to anything. Maybe it was just riding out the "new tank syndrome" thing but many was the time I looked down my nose at this leather and thought, "This is it?!?. This is all it does???". At that time, I probably would've traded it for a sheet of nori (if I had known what nori was then). But suddenly, it just seemed to take off. And although not nearly the fastest grower in the tank, it still moves along at a pretty fair clip. I think it's actually divided into two separate colonies now but as they're still so close together, it's hard to tell. Anyway, together or separately, it now measures a little over a foot long and perhaps 8" wide. It's obviously at the very bottom of the tank and receives a moderate undulating water flow. It has also dawned on me that I don't see this species offered for sale very much around my area. Not quite sure why. Maybe it's that two-year acclimation period. Good thing our wives aren't so hard on us."
