the deep purple color for which they're
best known and have already become
the favorites of a few local reefkeeppers. |

#39 Yet
another one of Xtremes 'frag
pack'pieces, I'm hoping
this stag is their A. abrolhensis.
It is just beginning to color up
to a slight violet with green undertones.
I managed to place it up very high
in the tank but toward the rear,
not quite directly under the bulbs
themselves. Unfortunately, the light
there is diffused by one of the top
acrylic bracing's. So I'll
just have to see what happens here.
Moving it at this point would be
dicey but obviously if it's
not doing well, that's what
I'll have to do. So far, so
good though. |
Acropora
#40 Finally,
a small colony! This piece from Reefer
Madness was sold to me last February
as an A.nobilis. It has so far maintained
its unusual teal color,though the
tips have gone purple, and has done
very well. There have already been
some signs of growth in that new'branchlets'
are starting to pop up here and there
but it has yet to take off the way
many stags seem to do. Because of
its color (it's the only really
teal piece I have in the tank), it
already garners quite a bit of attention.
Also, as this is supposed to be one
of the easier species to keep, I
would not be surprised if this eventually
became one of the tank's true
showpieces. [UPDATE 7/04: This piece
has lightened considerably in the
last month. It’s not bleaching
as its corallites still seem to be
alive but it has gone nearly white.
Light shock, maybe?
In any event, I'll probably
move it down a |
|
little.
I don't
know if it'll be enough to
make a difference. Sometimes these
things tend to work themselves
out.] |

#41 Man,
do I have high hopes for this one!Again,
from Reefer Madness, this stag was
labeled as an A.formosa. Hoping to
maintain the awesome thickness of
its branches, I
have this piece up high and I'm
blasting it with chaotic
flow from two of my returns that
I have facing each other on either
side of it. Though signs of growth
have been minimal so far, polyp
extension has been good so the
piece appears healthy. It's my five year
old's favorite coral because
it's hand-like shape seems
to be saying 'hi' to
her whenever she comes into the
fish room ('Dang, I'd
like to be five again…for
a little while') so now it's
even more incumbent upon me to
keep it happy. And I thought this
was supposed to be a relaxing hobby. |

#42 Ever
seen a green tort? Well,
this just might be one. It
came to my attention through
my LFS,who actually CALLED
me to inform me of its presence.Of
course, this was about a
week and a half after it
sat unsold in one of their
display tanks. Now, in MY
defense, I was in California
at the time so I had an alibi
for not duly trudging down
to the stores on delivery
day like a good reefer should. But
after it was tentatively
ID'd (by Greg Schiemer),
Jason at House of Fins notified
my service technician, Ray,
who in turn contacted me
in LA. And through a series
of phone calls and email
imaging (I love email imaging),
we did the deal.
